Motivation

Given the current trends in technology, AI and robotics, computers and machines could possibly replace many jobs. Overall, this is a positive development as explained in this 2012 TEDx talk.

It is essential to make this transition smooth, and to ensure that everybody has the means, at minimum to survive, and at maximum to pursue their goals. One way is through a Universal Basic Income, a fundamental right that guarantees a regular basic income for every citizen.

Several UBI experiments have already been conducted, and newer ones would continue in the future. This project can be considered similar in nature, but with some important features:

  • UBI experiments are typically designed for a limited number of people, through regional, economic or other prerequisites. For this project, the only prerequisites are a valid Aadhar card and a UPI account. Thus, in theory it could reach hundreds of millions of users, essentially the largest UBI experiment on the planet.
  • UBI experiments are also typically time-limited; running for a few months to years. For this project, there is no planned end date. Thus, in theory it could keep running as long as there are funds to keep paying a UBI to the participants.
